When you create visuals for your business, they carry more of a story then you realize. While you may capture an amazing image or dynamic video, if you fail to consider a few important details you will miss an opportunity to really strengthen your brand awareness. Here are five key things to consider before you step in front of the camera so you can be on brand:
Key #1 – A Brand Matched Background
What I mean by this is making certain that you weave elements of your brand’s color, vibe and your personality into the backdrop of your images and video whenever possible.
For example, if you have a regularly scheduled video you record, then create a few branded “sets” by adding books, décor or a solid piece of artwork. Or if you are working with a professional for images and video, be sure to ask about how you can add these type of background elements.
Key #2 – Dress for Success
When you are selecting what to wear, go with either something in your brand color pallet or if your background is packing enough brand color punch, go with more neutral choices (grays, blacks or earth tones).
Also if you can lose the patterns, as they can be distracting and sometimes cause the camera to be a bit wonky.
Key #3 – Do a Mirror Check
Make sure you look the same way you would be seen in a professional situation. So if you normally do not wear make-up…keep it natural. OR if you normally are seen with glasses then be sure to wear them or use a dummy set (no lenses).
Here are some basics to be sure you look your best:
- Ladies, use a touch of lipstick. Even if you don’t wear it, this will give you some pop.
- Guys, use lip balm to hydrate (no one wants chapped looking lips).
- Translucent powder is your friend to get rid of shine.
- Make sure you brush your teeth and do a check (no one wants that black spot).
- Style your hair so it looks brushed and kept. You don’t have to go crazy, just look polished.
Key #4 – Props to the Brand Props
Props are a great way you can intentionally bring your brand’s personality and vibe to the forefront. This could be a sign, a funky sculpture or object lesson item. Have fun and use your imagination (or ask a friend for some ideas).
For example, I had a client who always talked about those “squirrels” that distract you as an entrepreneur, so she used a stuffed squirrel occasional in her video series.
Key #5 – Mentally Prepare
First, ask yourself a question. Are you feeling your best? Be honest and if not, reschedule the shoot if you are able. If you are truly having an off day, the camera will pick up on it.
Second, mental prep is vital so you can “step into your brand” and be present. This can mean different things for different people, but here are a few ways to get dial things in:
- Take a minimum of 10 minutes to close your eyes and focus on what you want to create.
- Play your favorite song and move around a bit to get the energy flowing.
- If you are recording a video or going LIVE, do a short run through of what you will talk about.
Finally, if you need a cheer leader or audience, then team up with others for your creative process or hire a professional.
